Extractions

Tooth Extractions Are The Last Resort

As dentists, we typically consider tooth extraction a last resort when there are no other viable options to save the tooth. There are several reasons why a tooth may need to be extracted:

Extensive Decay: When a tooth is severely decayed, and the decay has reached deep into the tooth, it may not be possible to save it with a filling or a crown. In such cases, extraction may be necessary to prevent the spread of infection.

Advanced Gum Disease: Periodontal or gum disease can lead to the loss of supporting structures around the tooth, including bone. If the disease has progressed to an advanced stage and the tooth is loose or no longer stable, extraction may be the only option.

Trauma or Injury: A tooth that has suffered significant trauma, such as a fracture or a dislocation, may not be salvageable, especially if the damage extends to the tooth’s root.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth: Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, often become impacted, meaning they do not have enough space to emerge properly. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, infection, and damage to adjacent teeth, necessitating their removal.

Severe Infection: When a tooth is infected and the infection has spread to the pulp (innermost part of the tooth) and surrounding tissues, a root canal treatment may be attempted to save the tooth. However, if the infection is too severe or unresponsive to treatment, extraction may be required to prevent further complications.

Crowding or Orthodontic Treatment: In some cases, teeth may need to be extracted to create space in the mouth for orthodontic treatment (braces or aligners) to be successful. This is typically done as a part of a comprehensive treatment plan to improve overall dental alignment and bite.

Malpositioned or Supernumerary Teeth: Teeth that are malpositioned, extra (supernumerary), or causing significant bite problems may need to be extracted to restore proper dental alignment and function.

Cysts or Tumors: In rare cases, the presence of cysts or tumors in the jawbone may necessitate the removal of a tooth to eliminate the source of the problem and prevent further complications.

Failed Previous Dental Treatments: In some instances, a tooth may have undergone multiple unsuccessful treatments, and the structure is compromised to the point where extraction is the only viable option left.
